"Yesterday, I went to my local Home Depot to buy a new thermostat since the one I use to help heat my home no longer functions. It took me about 15-20 minutes to find the item that I was looking for. That was after hunting down a worker who told me what aisle I can find the item in. I felt so alone and helpless there as I usually do when visiting a big-box hardware store such as Home Depot. Well, the item I purchased turned out to be the wrong one. Today, I was determined to visit a local mom & pop hardware store since I like to support local businesses anyway. As soon as I entered Reiman's True Value Hardware store located at 1825 Victory Blvd in Staten Island, I was immediately greeted by a worker with, "Hi, how can I help you?". After I told him what I was looking for, he escorted me to the section that had thermostats. He stayed there with me until I found the one that looked like the one that I was looking for. I brought the box to the cash register and told the cashier that I wasn't sure if the thermostat in the box was the same as the one that I was replacing. Without hesitation, the cashier carefully opened the box. She had trouble opening it and another employee quickly came to assist her. Once she got the box opened, she showed me the actual thermostat, which matched the one that I had in my house. It took me all of five minutes to enter and exit this store and I exited it with confidence due to the help that I received. This experience shows me what a difference there is between a big box store and a mom & pop, and it's a difference between night and day. Home Depot took me 20 minutes and I had to hunt down someone to help me. Reiman's took me five minutes with the immediate help of three employees. This is a perfect example for why we should all shop locally and put our money into the pockets of our our local business owners instead of billionaires like the owner of Home Depot."
