"Wasn't that busy. Went as a group of 4. I didn't foot the bill, so I don't know what it cost. I must have ate 10 soup dumplings or something. It was good. They gave us a third order of it for free. Something to do with not using some parking thing they could do. Had some wine chicken, it's not my thing. It's a cold dish. The other 2 in the group with experience eating it liked it. There was this cold appetizer that wasn't that spicy, but as you ate more of it the spiciness starts stacking. Some spicy pork wontons were okay. The rest of the group had some sort of beef noodle soup. They really liked it, they devoured it. Came in a very big bowl."

"A very nice dinner, indeed! It's Saturday and all places in Flushing seemed to be fully booked with a long waiting list. We got here by chance and what a surprise. Very nice quaint restaurant, a little space but so well organized. Everything is casually elegant and the service is just so fine! The food was excellent. Large portions and very fine cooking. Each dish was delicious and perfectly done. Never too sweet, never too salty, always tender. We tried so many things! You can have a look from the pictures By the way, my daughter is vegetarian and we had no problem finding lots of options for her that we all enjoyed. I am sharing. Honestly, we had a great family time with great Shanghainese chinese food in a very nice, quiet restaurant. Hope we'll be back here eventually!"

"Consistently solid Shanghainese restaurant in Flushing -- definitely one of my favourites in the area, and it's never too busy or pricey (probably cos it's a bit further away from the "main" central area of downtown Flushing). If you order above a certain amount (I think $30), you can get a free order of the soup dumplings 鮮肉小籠包 (or get free validated parking?). They are really delicious and definitely one of the highlights of this restaurant! They are just practically overflowing with so much soup, with really thin skins and such fragrant, juicy pork fillings. Some other must-tries: - Chilli oil wontons 紅油抄手 were fantastic. Portion size was a little larger than I expected, and the chilli oil smelled so good! - Scallion pancake with beef 蔥油餅夾牛肉 is one of my favourites. The wrapper was very crispy and the beef was tender and very savoury. The balance of the slightly-sharp scallion flavour was perfect. - Fried chinese chives box 韭菜盒子, another classic. Lovely crispy outside layer with a delicious fresh chives/noodles/etc. filling. - Soymilks - I've had both the hot and cold sweet soymilks, and they are both delicious. You can't go wrong here. The location is a bit hidden (in the back of a small mall), which I suspect is why it's not busier. I've never had to wait, even during weekend lunch hours. Service is always very efficient and to-the-point, which I appreciate."

"I enjoyed my last visit, so I stopped again on Oct. 26, 2024. The food was still great. Ordered a lot more than what we could finish. Packed and brought home. If I have to do some comparisons, the Soup Dumplings with Pork were much better than Pan Fried Pork Buns. This was my first time at Lao Yu Yuan. I very much enjoyed the food and experience. The taste was pretty authentic, the service was good, and the environment was clean and enjoyable. For the 4 dishes we ordered, I liked the "Mustard Green, Bamboo Shoots, and Pork Rice Cake" was the best. From the materials to preparation to taste were just perfect. The taste of the "Sesame Praised Fish" was great, but it would be better if a different type of fish was used. The fish was a bit too hard. The "Soup Dumpling with Pork" tasted great. The vinegar prepared for the dumpling was perfect. The dough for the dumpling was a bit too tough, especially the top tip portion of the dumpling."

"We went to the restaurant for lunch and the food where really tasty, I don’t speak mandarin but they were so nice. We order dumplings pork soup really delicious and a cold meat a bit spicy with a really good flavor, vegetables and rice cake. Is a small place inside of the mall, the ambience clean and traditional decoration with a good taste. I like the the fact that everything looks clean, the service was fast and tasty food."
