"Place des Tanneurs stands on the site of a former rampart in the early 17th century, at the junction of six streets forming a bustling crossroads in the heart of Aix-en-Provence. This area, which became the center of tanning activity, gave its name to Rue des Tanneurs as well as to the neighboring square where the fountain now stands. Tanneries, which consumed a lot of water, had been located here for over two centuries, supplied by local springs and Roman aqueducts. Built in 1761, the fountain was designed according to plans by Georges Vallon, one of Aix-en-Provence's leading architects at the time. It was supplied with water by a pipe dating back to the fountain at the Hôtel de Ville. The choice of materials reflects regional expertise: the urn and sculpted ornaments are in the Louis XV or Napoleon III style, while the structural stone comes from Calissane and the stone from the Pourrières basin. The pipes quickly became clogged with aquatic plants, rendering the fountain inactive for nearly fifty years. A major renovation was undertaken in 1861: the basin was rebuilt, and the original sculpted elements (urns, mascarons, etc.) were carefully preserved and reinstalled. The Tanners' Fountain has been listed as a historical monument since 1949, a testament to its heritage value within Aix-en-Provence."

"Beautiful fountain, currently working well. It has developed a bit of patina over the years, but that's part of the charm."
